Healthy Electric Homes

The Best Choice for Building or Remodeling

*Note to our neighbors affected by the Marshall Fire: We empathize with all those who have lost their homes in this terrible tragedy. We hope the information provided on this site will be of some help as you consider your rebuilding options.

Reasons to switch

From Methane (aka “natural”) Gas to an all-Electric Home

Rebuilding all-electric with heat pumps and induction stoves can cost less than a methane gas home. New homes with methane gas appliances and a separate A/C system need gas infrastructure throughout along with flues and venting systems to prevent gas-related carbon monoxide poisoning. All-electric homes' cold-climate heat pump systems also provide A/C and maintain high efficiency down to -13ºF, so no methane infrastructure, service or gas backup is needed. Plus there are many heat pump rebates and incentives available to further lower the overall expense.

As gas prices spike with supply, climate, and geopolitical instability, the cost of running a highly efficient electric home is expected to remain low and more stable than gas.

An abundance of peer-reviewed studies shows that using methane gas for cooking and heating releases breathable toxics that can cause or worsen many illnesses and diseases, including asthma, cancer, mental illness, Alzheimers, compromised childhood development and IQ, premature death, and more. Switching to a healthy electric home reduces these threats and their associated financial and emotional burdens. The risk of gas fires and explosions are similarly reduced.

We have the home tech solutions right now to help mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change and reduce the future likelihood of such catastrophes as the Marshall Fire. We no longer need to burn the greenhouse gas methane in our homes, a fossil fuel with 86 times the global warming impact of CO2 over a 20-year period.

Petro-state dictators rely on the huge international demand for fossil fuels to finance their military assaults and line their and their cronies’ pockets. Cutting off their fossil-fuel revenue pipelines can lower the risk of military adventurism and its attendant human suffering.

As our society moves away from polluting, expensive, climate and health-harming fossil fuels, methane gas homes will become more and more unattractive and undesirable relics of the past. Healthy electric homes, conversely, will be seen as more desirable, commanding higher home prices.

Low ongoing energy costs

As gas prices spike with supply, climate, and geopolitical instability, the cost of running a highly efficient electric home is expected to remain low and more stable than gas.

Improved health and safety

An abundance of peer-reviewed studies shows that using methane gas for cooking and heating releases breathable toxics that can cause or worsen many illnesses and diseases, including asthma, cancer, mental illness, Alzheimers, compromised childhood development and IQ, premature death, and more. Switching to a healthy electric home reduces these threats and their associated financial and emotional burdens. The risk of gas fires and explosions are similarly reduced.

We no longer need to burn the greenhouse gas methane in our homes, a fossil fuel with 86 times the global warming impact of CO2 over a 20-year period.

International conflict

Petro-state dictators rely on the huge international demand for fossil fuels to finance their military assaults and line their and their cronies’ pockets. Cutting off their fossil-fuel revenue pipelines can lower the risk of military adventurism and its attendant human suffering.

Energy independence and security

We now know that trying to drill and frack our way to energy independence and security only feeds our fossil fuel dependence, delaying society’s urgent and necessary transition to renewable energy, and corrupting our democracy. Energy independence and security will only come from freeing ourselves of our fossil fuel addiction.

Home market values

As our society moves away from polluting, expensive, climate and health-harming fossil fuels, methane gas homes will become more and more unattractive and undesirable relics of the past. Healthy electric homes, conversely, will be seen as more desirable, commanding higher home prices.

Testimonials

What do all-electric homeowners say?

Testimonials from residents of the all-electric Geos community in Arvada, CO

My wife and I have not had any respiratory illness since we moved into the home 5 years ago. The ground source heat pump keeps the home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  Solar panels on the roof provide all of the electrical energy I need. I have no natural gas bill. This home was comparable in cost to conventional new homes.
Jim Horan
5-year Resident
On New Year's Eve of 2022, I found out that my friend and his family lost their home to the Marshall fire.  While competing with hundreds of other displaced families to find a temporary rental, they stayed at my home over New Year's weekend and marveled at how comfortable my home was with a geothermal heat pump and a conditioning energy recovery ventilator that checks for unhealthy carbon dioxide levels in the house and brings in fresh air heated by outgoing air as needed.  My friend told me that after seeing what could be done with an all-electric house, he wanted his home to be rebuilt all-electric.

The all-electric home - it feels like magic – warm at -10F, cool at 100F, healthy indoor air, and near $0.00 utility bills. It is not magic – it is real; it is available; it is affordable. You cannot afford NOT to go all-electric.

Heat Pumps

What are heat pumps?

A heat pump uses electricity and refrigerant to move heat from one area to another. In winter, ambient heat is drawn from the outside air or from underground, concentrated by means of a compressor, then blown into the space to be heated. In summer, the process is reversed, cooling the interior.

Induction Stoves

What are induction stoves?

An induction cooktop cooks by creating an electromagnetic field below the glass surface which directly heats the induction cookware placed above. Unlike thermal conduction, it heats this cookware directly without the need for a flame or burner.

“I love, love, love the induction technology”

Rick Bayless (PBS, James Beard Award, Top Chef winner)

“I’m a huge fan of induction cooking… It’s genius technology.”

Ming Tsai (“Cooking with Ming”/“Simply Ming”)

“(Not) just a great way to cook. It’s also good for your health and the environment.” “The fact that induction produces very little waste heat was my main reason for making the switch (in his restaurants, to reduce heat strain on employees)” “The lack of fumes meant I wouldn’t have to spend money on high-powered ventilation… and they’re way easier to clean.”

Tik Tok Chef Jon Kung

Heat Pumps

Heat Pump Hot Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters work the same way as heat pump heating/cooling systems, but instead of heating air, they heat water. Since they heat more slowly than electric or methane gas water heaters, some heat pump water heaters are available as “hybrids”, allowing for electric resistance water heating as needed in high demand situations, but using only the heat pump at other times. Heat pump water heaters cost more to buy than traditional types, but are very inexpensive and the most energy efficient to operate, and don’t involve home fossil fuels with all their attendant health, safety, and climate issues.
